Why tipping house cleaners is confusing
With restaurants there's a clear habit. With house cleaning there isn't. Some people tip every visit, some only at the holidays, and some never do. Part of the confusion is that house cleaners can be paid in very different ways:
- Independent cleaners set their own rate and keep what you pay.
- App and marketplace cleaners are paid through a platform that often adds its own fees, and many of these platforms prompt you to tip in the app.
- Company employees are paid a wage by the company, and the company sets the price you pay.
How your cleaner is paid changes whether a tip is expected, which is why the same question gets different answers from different people.
If you do tip, here's common practice
There's no official rule, but these are the habits most people follow:
- Recurring cleanings: many people skip per-visit tips and give one larger thank-you at the holidays, often around the cost of one visit.
- One-time or extra-dirty jobs: a tip on the day is a nice way to say thanks for a move-out, a post-party clean or a home that needed more than usual.
- Cash or in the app: cash goes straight to the cleaner. If you tip in an app, check that the full amount reaches them.
The math adds up faster than it looks. If you tip $15 a visit on a weekly schedule, that's about $65 a month, or close to $800 a year, on top of the price. It's worth counting tips when you compare quotes. Our Orange County cost guide shows how fees and tips change the real monthly price.
When you don't need to tip
You don't need to tip when the company tells you tips aren't needed and pays its cleaners a set wage. In that case the price you see is the whole price. A kind word, a review or a note left on the counter still goes a long way, and good feedback helps the company recognize the people who earned it.

Why we built Back to Clean without tips
Tip math at the door is one of the small frictions that makes hiring a cleaner feel awkward. So we took it out:
- One flat monthly price. Supplies, travel and card fees are included. No tips needed.
- Our cleaners are employees. They're paid by us, not by the tip jar, so the service doesn't depend on who tipped last time.
- The same small team every visit. If you want to say thanks, tell us. We'll make sure your team hears it.

See my priceCommon questions
Do I have to tip a house cleaner?
No. Tipping is a personal choice. It's most common with independent and app-based cleaners, and not needed when a company says tips aren't expected.
How much do people usually tip at the holidays?
Many people give about the cost of one regular visit as a year-end thank-you for a recurring cleaner. It's a habit, not a rule.
Does Back to Clean expect tips?
No. Your monthly price covers everything, and our cleaners are paid employees. If you want to thank your team, tell us and we'll pass it along.
Should I count tips when comparing cleaning prices?
Yes. A small tip every visit adds up over a year. Compare the total monthly cost, including fees and tips, not just the hourly rate.
