# What happens during a first deep clean (and why most companies require one)

> Almost every recurring cleaning service starts with a deep clean. Here's what's actually in it, why it exists, and how it sets up every visit after.

By Back to Clean. Published November 4, 2026.

> **Short answer:** a first deep clean is a top-to-bottom reset of the whole house. It clears the buildup a regular visit isn't built for, so every visit after can focus on keeping things clean instead of catching up.

## Why companies require a deep clean first

A regular cleaning is designed to maintain a home that's already in good shape. If the first visit tried to do that in a home with months of buildup, one of two things would happen: the visit would run long, or parts of the house would get skipped. Neither feels good.

A first deep clean solves that. It brings the whole house to a baseline, so the team can learn your home and every visit after starts from clean. That's why most companies ask for one, and why some call it a "refresh" or "initial clean."

## What a deep clean usually covers

Exact lists vary by company, but a first deep clean generally goes further than a regular visit in these areas:

- **Kitchen:** built-up grease on the stovetop and backsplash, appliance fronts, cabinet fronts and handles, and a thorough sink and counter scrub.
- **Bathrooms:** soap scum and hard water buildup on the tub, shower, glass and fixtures, plus the base and behind of the toilet.
- **Dust everywhere:** baseboards, door frames, light switches, shelves, and the high and low spots that regular visits keep up with afterward.
- **Floors:** a careful vacuum and mop, including edges and corners.

Inside the fridge, inside the oven and inside cabinets are often treated as extras, so ask what's included before you book.

## What a first deep clean costs in Orange County

In our November 2026 check of Orange County cleaning options, required first visits ranged from about $185 at referral agencies to $250 to $435 at local cleaning companies. Some charge by the hour for the first visit, which makes the final price hard to predict. Our [cost guide](https://backtoclean.com/blog/house-cleaning-cost-orange-county) has the full breakdown.

## How our first deep clean works

At Back to Clean, your first visit is a top-to-bottom deep clean for a **flat $99**, whatever your home size. No hourly billing and no walk-through quote. After that, your regular schedule and your monthly price begin.

- **Same team from day one.** The team that does your deep clean is the team that keeps coming back, so they learn your home right away.
- **Add-ons available.** Extra Detail (inside the fridge, oven and cabinets) and Laundry and Beds are $20 a visit each.
- **Fixed if missed.** If anything gets missed, tell us and we come back within 48 hours to fix it, free.

## How to get the most out of it

1. **Pick up clutter** from counters and floors so the team can spend time cleaning, not moving things.
2. **Point out your priorities,** like the shower glass or the stovetop.
3. **Share entry details** if you won't be home. They stay private to your team.

## Common questions

**Do I need a deep clean if my house is already pretty clean?**
Most companies still ask for one because it sets a consistent baseline and lets the team learn your home. With Back to Clean it's a flat $99 either way.

**How long does a deep clean take?**
Longer than a regular visit, and it depends on the size and condition of the home. That's why many companies charge by the hour for it. Ours is a flat $99, so the time doesn't change your price.

**Is inside the fridge and oven part of a deep clean?**
It varies by company. At Back to Clean, inside the fridge, oven and cabinets is our Extra Detail add-on for $20 a visit.

**Do I need to be home for the deep clean?**
No. Many people share a door code or lockbox, and entry details stay private to your team.
